Dubai is better divided not by map but by how the windows open. The first world is towers: Marina, JLT, Business Bay, Downtown, Dubai Creek Harbour. Half the glazing there is fixed, only a narrow sash or the balcony exit opens, and the facade is controlled by building management. Two consequences follow. The frame colour has to be agreed against the building's rules, and people almost always choose a system that fits inside the opening and does not spoil the view from the street. The second world is villas in communities: Arabian Ranches, The Springs, The Meadows, Jumeirah Park, Al Furjan, Tilal Al Ghaf. The openings are wider, the garden door is tall and sliding, and the way to the pool is a passage no standard sash will close. Sizes like that take pleated or a sliding system in a guide, while over the staircase and in the hall you meet windows of non-standard geometry that are priced separately. The third world is low-rise stock: Mirdif, Al Rashidiya, Al Barsha, parts of Silicon Oasis. Here you more often find turning sashes and an ordinary door to the street, and the cheapest answer is a framed screen on hooks. Hatta stands apart, with a mountain climate and villas on the slope. One more local feature: new districts are handed over in whole phases with identical openings, so in JVC or MBR City the dimensions of neighbouring apartments often match to the millimetre, and an order covering several flats is quicker to price.

Within Dubai we reach any district, Hatta included. If you live in a tower, warn the concierge in advance and check whether a pass and a works permit are needed. In many buildings fitters are let in only through the service lift and only during the hours written into the house rules, and the pass application is submitted by the apartment owner rather than by us. In gated communities the gate lets us in on a call from the villa's owner. Mention parking separately: in the dense part of Marina and Business Bay there is almost no visitor space, and that affects how long it takes to carry the tools up.
