Typical The Lakes architecture with an insect screen on the window in front

Mosquito Nets in The Lakes

The Lakes stands around bodies of water, and the villas here are larger than in the neighbouring communities. Water next to the house means more insects in the evening, and large garden openings mean closing them with systems that span the full width.

01THERE IS MORE WATER THAN IN THE NEIGHBOURING COMMUNITIES

The lakes are larger, the plots wider, and evening insect activity is higher. There is almost no wind to offset it.

02WHAT GIVES FIRST IS THE TRAVEL, NOT THE MESH

A long track collects sand unevenly and the screen binds along one stretch. That is cleaning, not replacement.

03A BI-FOLD NEEDS ROOM FOR THE STACKED LEAVES

If the screen was chosen without allowing for them, the cassette starts rubbing against the stack — visible within a month.

04WHAT MAKES INSTALLATION EASIER

  • Large plots and a clear driveway: there is room to turn a long profile
  • A gated community — let security know about the visit
  • Damp by the lakes wears hardware faster than in dry streets
  • Wide systems go in more comfortably here than in towers

What is built here

Villas in The Lakes are roomier and stand on bigger plots. The living and dining rooms open onto the terrace through wide openings, often sliding doors of several leaves, or bi-folds.

Water is the main factor. Unlike The Springs, where the lakes are small, here the water area is greater and the plots more spacious, and evening insect activity is higher. Meanwhile there is almost no wind: the community is low and sheltered by planting, so the insects are not blown away as they are on open shores.

Large openings are the second feature. An ordinary screen will not go on a bi-fold, because the whole span opens and the whole span has to be closed. Pleated or a motorised system works.

Third: humidity is higher by the water, and hardware ages faster than in dry districts. Not as fast as on the sea coast, but noticeably, and on cheap metal it will show within a couple of seasons.

What we have done here

We are not going to publish the addresses of private villas. We come out to survey free of charge.

What follows from the building stock without speculation: in The Lakes the conversation is nearly always about a wide terrace opening, and the main question is how to close it without a post in the middle.

Getting to you

The community is gated and entry is on notice from the resident. Let security know about the visit.

The plots are large and the approach to the house is clear, so fitting large systems is convenient: there is room to turn a long profile, and that noticeably simplifies work on wide openings.

What breaks here most often

On wide openings by the water it is not the fabric that gives first but the travel: a long guide collects sand unevenly and the screen binds in one section. Second is hardware, undermined by humidity near the lakes. Third, characteristic of bi-folds: if the screen was chosen without allowing for the stack of folded leaves, the cassette starts rubbing against it, and that shows within a month.

Common questions

How do I close a bi-fold?

With pleated across the full width or a motorised screen: a bi-fold opens the entire span.

Are there more mosquitoes than at the neighbours'?

By the water and out of the wind, activity is higher than in open dry districts.

Why does our hardware seize?

Higher humidity by the water. On cheap metal it shows within a couple of seasons.

Is a pass needed?

Yes, through community security on notice from the resident.

Is a motor worth it?

On a wide opening, yes: drawing several metres of fabric evenly by hand is not easy.
