Blackout & Blind Screens in Dubai
A blackout screen does two jobs at once: it holds insects out and cuts direct sun. The fabric is denser than standard mesh, so the room behind it still ventilates but stops heating up under a patch of sunlight. In Dubai this is the second most common reason people buy, right after mosquitoes.
01IT IS NEITHER A CURTAIN NOR A FILM
The fabric is woven denser than standard and has a dark outward face that reflects part of the sun, while air still passes through the mesh.
02SOUTH AND WEST WINDOWS
A bedroom where you want to sleep past an early sunrise, a child's room, a room used for a daytime nap: wherever the afternoon sun hits the room.
03NOT FOR A WINDOW YOU LOOK OUT OF
The view through a dense fabric is lost — that is a property, not a fault. For a window with a view, take UltraView.
04WHAT TO ALLOW FOR
- The room stays ventilated, unlike behind a curtain
- A dense weave clogs with dust faster
- The effect is stronger on upper floors with no shading from neighbours
- The mesh goes into the same frame
Who it suits
Suits you if
Windows facing south and west, where the sun comes into the room after midday. A bedroom you would like to sleep in past sunrise, and sunrise here is early. A nursery where a child naps during the day. Rooms that keep the air conditioning running without a break: take the direct sun off the floor and the wall and the load on the climate system drops noticeably.
Not for you if
Do not put it on a window you look out of. Blackout fabric is dense and the view through it is lost: that is its property, not a defect. For a window with a sea or a city view take UltraView and solve the sun with a curtain. Do not put it where the room is already dark either: you will get a space that needs the lights on during the day.
How it works
It works neither like a curtain nor like a film. The fabric is woven more densely than standard mesh and has a darker face turned outward: it reflects part of the radiation and scatters the rest, so no patch of sun lands on the floor.
Air still passes. That is the difference from a shutter, which closes the opening entirely: with a blackout screen the window stays open, the room ventilates, and at the same time it is not hot.
The system is chosen to suit the opening, as with any screen. On a window a roller is the usual pick: you run the fabric down through the hot hours and take it back into the cassette in the evening. On a panoramic door it is pleated or sliding. Blackout fabric can go into a fixed frame, but then the room is shaded permanently and within a week you will want it out.
A note on colour. The darker the fabric on the outside, the better you see out and the worse anyone sees in. A lighter fabric reflects more heat but glares more and gives less privacy.

What it costs
Blackout fabric costs more than standard, and the total depends on the system chosen: a roller cassette is priced differently from pleated. We work from area at 320 AED per square metre plus the system itself. At the survey it is worth looking at the window during the hours the sun actually reaches it: sometimes shading half the opening is enough rather than all of it, and that changes the price immediately.
A blackout mesh cuts direct sun while air still passes through it: this is not a curtain.
Common questions
Is this the same as window tint?
No. Tint works permanently and does not come off; the screen goes back into the cassette when the sun has moved. And tint does not stop insects.
Will the room get stuffy?
No, the fabric ventilates. It is denser than standard so the flow is weaker, but the window stays open, unlike with a shutter.
How much darker will it be?
It depends on the fabric. This is not blackout curtain darkness: the job is to remove direct sun, not to turn day into night.
Can you see the street through it?
Less well than through an ordinary screen. If the view matters to you, this is not your option.
Can it go on part of the window only?
Yes, and that is often the better answer: shade the sash the sun hits and leave the rest standard.

Proof, not promises

Our building maintenance was taking too long, so I contacted them directly. They asked for photos on WhatsApp, sent a quotation and arranged a date. Two installers arrived exactly on time, used shoe covers and finished three windows and a balcony door before lunch. They even adjusted a loose window handle without charging extra.

My cat has always been a nightmare for scratching nets — she destroyed the last ones I had. They recommended a heavy-duty scratch-resistant mesh and it is brilliant. She has tried her hardest to claw through it and hasn't managed once. Much stronger than the regular stuff, but still clear enough.

I have really big windows, so I thought screens would be a hassle. They came, measured up and made custom frames that fit exactly. No gaps anywhere. It has been months and nothing has moved or sagged.

My apartment is right next to a garden, so the bugs have always been relentless. They fitted fibre mesh on everything and it has been a game changer — it keeps out even the smallest midges that used to drive me crazy. Less sand gets in on windy days too.

I have a lot of plants at home, so I was worried the screens would block too much light. They recommended a very thin, almost invisible mesh. Plenty of light still comes through, and there are no more small insects around my plants.

After waking up with mosquito bites several times, I decided to install screens. They fitted magnetic screens on two bedroom windows — quick and clean. The magnets close properly and keep insects out, and the mesh quality is much better than the cheap ones I had before.
