Bi-folds are standard on Dubai villas and simultaneously the most awkward opening for a screen. When the door is folded away, several metres of clear span remain, and it has to be closed with a single sheet.
Pleated copes because it folds into a narrow cassette itself and needs no room for a leaf to swing. The fabric is drawn across the opening and gathers in a concertina with the same logic as the door. Visually it reads as one piece, and that is the main reason bi-folds get pleated screens.
A motorised screen solves the same problem without a post in the middle and without effort. Pulling several metres of fabric straight by hand is not easy, and the motor earns its place here on quality of travel rather than convenience.
A separate point about the stack of folded leaves. When the bi-fold is open, the leaves occupy the reveal on one side. The screen cassette cannot go there: it will either not open or start rubbing against the door. That is checked at the survey, and it is the most common cause of rework when a screen is ordered to dimensions without a visit.
The threshold on a bi-fold is usually recessed. The screen's bottom guide has to be equally flat, otherwise the point of the level floor is lost.
