Roll-Up Mosquito Nets in Dubai
A roll-up screen winds onto a roller inside a slim cassette above the opening. Pull the bottom bar down and it covers the window; release the catch and the mesh disappears completely. It suits windows you want to free up entirely rather than doors you walk through all day.
01BY DAY THE WINDOW LOOKS UNSCREENED
Wind the fabric up and the opening is clear. A bedroom over the water, a living room in a tower, a kitchen window over the sink: the screen is needed in the evening.
02THE SPRING SETS THE WIDTH LIMIT
Past about a metre and a half the fabric drifts sideways as it winds and creases along the edge.
03A BUSY DOOR IS THE WRONG PLACE FOR IT
The spring wears fastest on openings pulled twenty times a day. Within a season the fabric stops winding all the way up.
04WHAT TO ALLOW FOR IN DUBAI
- Sand travels into the cassette with the fabric and acts as an abrasive
- Wipe the fabric before a long period of disuse
- Wound up, the fabric does not fade — an edge over a framed screen
- Window from 200 AED, door from 250
Who it suits
Suits you if
Take a roller where you want the opening genuinely clear when the screen is not in use. Nothing hangs in the frame, nothing sits to one side, and in the cool season the mesh lives inside the cassette instead of bleaching in the sun. That last point matters more in the UAE than people expect: a fixed panel left up all year ages twice as fast as one that spends half the year rolled away.
Not for you if
Not the right choice for a door you walk through twenty times a day. The spring mechanism wears fastest on high-traffic openings, and you will be paying for a repair rather than enjoying the convenience. Width is the other limit: past roughly a metre and a half the spring stops pulling the sheet evenly, the mesh drifts sideways as it winds and creases along the edge. On a wide opening you either fit two units or choose a different system.
How it works
The mesh is wound onto a tube inside the cassette. A spring inside that tube keeps constant tension, so the sheet stays flat as you pull it down and winds itself back when you release the catch. There is no motor and no power supply, which is why there is very little to fail.
Side guides hold the edges. Without them the sheet would flutter and pull out of line, which is what happens on cheap units after a windy month.
Compared with a sliding screen, the roller keeps the opening completely free but takes daily traffic far worse. Compared with a fixed frame it costs more and needs a cassette above the window, but it lets you forget the screen is there for half the year.
Sand behaves differently here than on other systems. It does not settle in a track; it travels into the cassette with the mesh and then works as an abrasive against the tube. Hence one simple habit for Dubai: wipe the sheet with a damp cloth before rolling it away after a dusty spell.
One thing to check on site: cassette depth. A tall window means a thick roll, and on a window with a shallow head the cassette can cover part of the glass. That is visible at the survey and invisible in a catalogue.

What it costs
Windows start at 200 AED in our price list. The calculator works from the area of the opening at 320 AED per square metre and adds 5% VAT on top. A roller costs more than a fixed frame of the same size because of the cassette and the spring mechanism. Options are per unit: handle 45 AED, child lock 35, extra frame 95. We quote after the survey rather than over the phone, because the height of the head above the window decides whether the cassette fits at all.
By opening type
Wound up inside its cassette the fabric is out of the sun — which is why a roll-up lasts longer where a screen is not needed all year.
Common questions
Why does the mesh wind up crooked?
Either the sheet is too wide for the spring, or there is sand in the cassette. The second is fixable by cleaning; the first only by changing system.
Will the cassette be obvious?
It depends on the height of the window: the taller the sheet, the thicker the roll. You can see it straight away at the survey.
Can I leave it rolled away for months?
Yes, and that is the right way to use it in the cool season. The mesh does not bleach inside the cassette.
Does it need power?
No. The spring does the work. If you want a powered version for an opening you cannot reach, that is a motorised screen.
Will it survive a balcony door?
It will work, but it is the wrong tool. A door used daily wears the spring fastest of all.

Our building maintenance was taking too long, so I contacted them directly. They asked for photos on WhatsApp, sent a quotation and arranged a date. Two installers arrived exactly on time, used shoe covers and finished three windows and a balcony door before lunch. They even adjusted a loose window handle without charging extra.

My cat has always been a nightmare for scratching nets — she destroyed the last ones I had. They recommended a heavy-duty scratch-resistant mesh and it is brilliant. She has tried her hardest to claw through it and hasn't managed once. Much stronger than the regular stuff, but still clear enough.

I have really big windows, so I thought screens would be a hassle. They came, measured up and made custom frames that fit exactly. No gaps anywhere. It has been months and nothing has moved or sagged.

My apartment is right next to a garden, so the bugs have always been relentless. They fitted fibre mesh on everything and it has been a game changer — it keeps out even the smallest midges that used to drive me crazy. Less sand gets in on windy days too.

I have a lot of plants at home, so I was worried the screens would block too much light. They recommended a very thin, almost invisible mesh. Plenty of light still comes through, and there are no more small insects around my plants.

After waking up with mosquito bites several times, I decided to install screens. They fitted magnetic screens on two bedroom windows — quick and clean. The magnets close properly and keep insects out, and the mesh quality is much better than the cheap ones I had before.
