Three different screens are sold as retractable in Dubai: a roller that winds onto a spring shaft, a pleated screen that folds like an accordion, and horizontal systems on a track.

Heat, sand and salty air
Sand from a shamal settles in the side rails and scratches the mesh as it winds. Wipe the rails with a damp cloth before you roll the screen up.
Near the sea in the Marina or on the Palm, salty air leaves a film on the rails. A rinse with fresh water now and then keeps the mesh running smoothly.

The spring is not made for constant traffic. A pleated screen or a hinged screen door lasts longer there.
A wide glass wall

Do you drill into the frame?+
The cassette and rails are usually fixed with small screws to the frame or the recess. The measurer shows you where before the fitting.
Can it handle Dubai heat and dust?+
Cassette and rails are aluminium with powder coating. Wipe sand out of the rails before rolling up, and the mesh winds cleanly.
Can a roller go on a balcony door?+
It can, as a sideways roller, but daily traffic wears the spring. For a balcony door we suggest a pleated screen at AED 1,550 per door.
