When Standard suits, and when it does not
Standard is the baseline fabric with a 1.2 × 1.2 mm aperture and 80% light transmission. It holds mosquitoes and larger insects, costs from 200 AED and goes into any system: framed, pleated, roll-up, sliding. Most screens in Dubai carry it, and in an ordinary flat inland from the water it is enough.
It does not suit in two cases. The first is small flies. A 1.2 mm aperture lets them through, and if you live by a lagoon, a canal or a mangrove zone you need a finer weave. People fit Standard, carry on catching insects in the room and conclude the screen is faulty, when the issue is the size of the hole.
The second case is animals. Standard thread does not hold claws, and a cat pulls a corner out in one go. For animals people take reinforced fabric, and that is not an upsell but the difference between a screen that lasts years and one that gets refitted in a month.
On care separately. The fabric is washed with warm soapy water and a soft sponge, without pressure and without solvents. It must not be vacuumed: the nozzle pulls the thread out of the weave. It is better dried in shade, because direct sun accelerates ageing.
If the fabric tears or dries out, there is no need to replace the whole screen. We take it out of the channel and re-stretch the frame with new material, and the type can be changed at the same time — for instance to a finer aperture, if it turns out that flies are getting through.
