A frame with freshly tensioned mesh on a workshop table

Mosquito Net Mesh Replacement

If the frame is sound and only the mesh has torn, sagged or clogged, there is no reason to replace the whole screen. We take the old fabric out of the groove, re-stretch the frame with new mesh and refit it. You can change the mesh type at the same time, to a finer weave against midges for instance.

01CHECK THE FRAME IN A MINUTE

Lay the screen on a flat floor. Resting on all four corners without rocking means it can be re-meshed. A lifted corner means it is out of true, and new mesh will sag within a season.

02LOOK AT THE GROOVE ALONG THE EDGE

The spline that holds the mesh sits in it. A broken or widened groove will not hold the spline, and re-meshing will not last.

03THE MESH TYPE CAN BE CHANGED

Since the frame is being stripped anyway, you can move to the mesh you actually need: a finer aperture against sandflies, pet-proof, anti-sand.

04HOW IT GOES

  • Usually the screen is taken to the workshop and comes back finished
  • It is done on site when the screen cannot be removed
  • Several screens are collected in one go, which costs less
  • The inspection visit is free

What we repair

Hole or cut
the whole sheet is replaced; we do not patch
Mesh has sagged
the cord has stretched, cord and mesh both replaced
Clogged with sand
if it washes out we say so; if not, it is replaced
Faded and crumbling
ultraviolet has dried the fibre, replacement only
Cat has pulled a corner out
re-stretched, and we suggest reinforced fabric
Midges getting through
aperture too large, changed to 0.8 mm

Repair or replace

Mesh is replaced for as long as the frame is sound, and you can check that yourself. Lay the screen on a flat floor. If it rests on all four corners and does not rock, it can be re-stretched. If one corner lifts, the frame has twisted, and new mesh will sag again within a season.

The second thing to look at is the groove around the edge. That is where the rubber cord holds the fabric. If the groove is split or has opened up, the cord has nothing to grip and re-stretching will not last.

There is one case where we advise against the work. If the screen is old and the profile has gone brittle in the sun, with cracks already showing at the corners, new mesh buys it a few months. Saying that at the start is more honest than taking money for a job that will have to be repeated.

How the repair works

Usually we collect. A technician comes, lifts the screen off, takes it to the workshop, the frame is re-stretched there, and it comes back and goes up in place. That is faster and neater than working on a balcony.

We re-stretch on site when the screen cannot be removed, because it sits in a fixed opening or is anchored. That takes longer.

If there are several screens we take them all in one trip. It costs less than calling a technician to each one in turn.

What a repair costs

The price depends on the area of the frame and the mesh you choose: standard is cheaper, anti-midge and reinforced fabrics cost more. We will not quote over the phone, because half of the job is the condition of the frame and that is only visible in person. The inspection is free, and if re-stretching the frame is not worth doing we will say so.

Someone else fitted it. Will you take it on?

Yes, we take it on. It makes no difference who fitted the screen: a frame is a frame and a groove is a groove. We re-stretch somebody else's construction exactly as we would our own, with the same warranty on the work.

The excess mesh trimmed along the edge of the frame

Half the job is the condition of the frame, and that is only visible in person — which is why re-meshing is not quoted over the phone.

Common questions

Can you patch it instead?

We do not. A patch lets go, and you are calling somebody back a month later.

How long will it take?

It depends on the workshop queue and how many screens there are. The date is given on site.

Can I change to a different mesh?

Yes, and it is a common reason for calling. If midges pass through standard mesh we fit 0.8 mm.

What if the frame is twisted after all?

We say so and offer a new screen. Re-stretching a twisted frame is pointless.

Do I bring it to you?

No. We come, take it down and take it away.
