The track needs somewhere to run to. An opening without that margin does not suit a sliding screen, and it shows at the survey.

Who it suits
Suits you if
Take a sliding screen when the door slides too. The screen repeats the logic of the door, so nobody in the household has to be taught how it works, which matters more than it sounds in a rented flat or a hotel apartment. It handles daily traffic well and the parts that wear out, the rollers, are cheap and quick to swap.
Not for you if
It permanently occupies part of the opening. Open the screen and the mesh panel does not vanish, it parks to one side. On a narrow doorway you will feel that every time you carry something through. It is also the system most affected by sand: the bottom rail collects it, the grit compacts, and the rollers start skipping. If you are not prepared to vacuum a rail every few weeks, look at a roller screen that hides the mesh away instead.
How it works
The mesh is stretched on a rigid frame that rides on rollers along a bottom rail, with a top rail keeping it upright. The whole assembly sits parallel to the glazing in its own plane, which is why the door and the screen never collide.
On a window the loads are small, the profile is thin and the screen barely reads in the opening. On a door the bottom rail carries weight and gets walked on, so it is made heavier and it needs cleaning more often.
The rail can be recessed flush with the floor or surface-mounted. Flush is more comfortable and collects less dust, but it has to be planned during the fit-out. Surface-mounted can be added any time and leaves a small threshold.
Compared with pleated, sliding is simpler and cheaper, and it keeps a post in the middle of very wide openings. Compared with a roller screen it takes daily traffic far better: a spring mechanism wears fastest on an opening you use twenty times a day.
One Dubai-specific point. Do not oil the rail. Oil holds sand, and within a week the screen moves worse than before. Clean is all it needs.

What it costs
Windows start at 200 AED in our price list and doors at 250. The calculator works from the area of the opening at 320 AED per square metre, adds the options you tick and then 5% VAT. A wide terrace opening costs more than a window of the same area because the hardware carries weight and the rail is heavier. We do not quote before the survey: how the rail is fixed and what it is fixed into decides half the job, and neither is visible in a photograph.
The rollers here are a consumable, not a failure: they pack with sand, wear out and are cheap to replace.
Common questions
Why has the screen become stiff?
Almost always sand compacted in the bottom rail. Vacuum the channel along its whole length with a narrow nozzle, wipe it and let it dry. Do not use oil.
How much of the doorway does it take?
The panel parks to one side and stays there. On a narrow door this is noticeable, and the surveyor works out the exact figure on site.
Do I have to recess the rail?
No. Surface-mounted works any time. Flush is more comfortable but has to be planned during the fit-out.
Will it hold up to a dog?
Standard mesh will not. Ask for reinforced mesh if an animal goes near the door.
Can the rollers be replaced?
Yes, they are a consumable and they are inexpensive. We carry the common types with us.
