A motorised screen deploys at the press of a button. It goes where nobody can reach by hand: windows above a stairwell, double-height rooms, roof lights, terraces several metres wide. The motor is tubular, runs on 230 V, and takes its command from a remote or a wall switch.

Who it suits

Suits you if

Buy it when the opening is physically out of reach. A window four metres above a staircase gets opened once a season precisely because nobody can get a ladder to it, and there the screen is either motorised or nonexistent. The same applies to a panoramic terrace: a five-metre sheet cannot be pulled straight by hand, it skews and catches in the guide. A motor pulls evenly from both ends.

Not for you if

Do not put one on a kitchen door or a window you open ten times a day. The motor is rated for a few cycles a day, not constant work, and on that kind of opening you are paying for a service life you will burn through in a couple of seasons. A hinged or pleated screen is cheaper and more robust there. The second limit is power. If there is nowhere to run a cable and the walls are already finished, fitting turns into building work.

How it works

The mesh is wound on a tube inside a cassette, with the tubular motor sitting inside that tube. The motor also holds the end positions, so the screen stops where it was set once and does not knock against the threshold.

Commands arrive by radio. The remote works up to thirty metres and through walls, so one handset covers several screens in different rooms. A wall switch goes in alongside for the day the remote goes missing.

The difference from an automatic screen is who makes the decision. Here a person does: you press, it closes. On an automatic screen a sensor decides, by temperature or air quality, and the motor there is a quieter 24 V unit. If all you need is to reach an unreachable window, there is no reason to pay for scenes and battery backup.

The difference from an ordinary roller screen is the drive and the size. A spring roller is limited to roughly a metre and a half, because beyond that the spring cannot pull the sheet evenly. A motor removes that limit, and the opening gets a single sheet instead of two halves with a post between them.

What it costs

A motorised screen is priced from the area of the opening, starting at 320 AED per square metre, plus the drive and the remote. The exact figure comes from the surveyor: it depends on the width of the sheet, on whether there is a power point nearby, and on how the cassette is mounted. An opening above a stairwell almost always costs more than a window of the same area on the ground floor, because the work is done at height. The survey is free, and we do not quote before it: guessing a height from a photograph is not honest.

A motor is bought not for comfort but because the opening is out of reach. On a kitchen door it burns through its life in a couple of seasons.

Common questions

What happens in a power cut?

The screen stays where it was. A manual override is available as an option and is worth having where the screen must close whatever happens.

One remote for all screens, or one each?

One handset can hold several screens on separate channels. The usual setup is a button per room plus one for all of them.

Can you hear the motor?

Yes. A 230 V tubular drive is audible, roughly like a shutter. If it is going in a bedroom and quiet matters, look at the automatic version: its 24 V motor is quieter.

Do the walls have to be chased?

Not if there is a socket or a ceiling point nearby. If there is nowhere to take power from, chasing is required, and that is a conversation for before the fit-out.

What is the maximum size?

The limit is set by the mesh and the stiffness of the guides rather than the motor. The surveyor gives you the figure for your opening on site.
