Sliding Screens for Terraces and Verandas
A terrace is where a sliding screen meets conditions it was not designed for indoors: long spans, constant wind and sun on the fabric all day. It works out there, but the specification changes.
01A HINGED LEAF HAS NOWHERE TO SWING
Furniture, planters or a dining table stand around the opening. A sliding panel takes exactly the strip along the wall where nobody walks anyway.
02AN OPEN-BOTTOM TRACK PROFILE
The track sits on tiles or decking. Sand blown in overnight drops out at the first movement of the panel, and hose water leaves the same way.

A terrace is open on three sides. Mesh held in a frame on all four edges is not blown out and does not flap at night.

The first issue on a long span is not the length of the fabric but the stiffness of the frame. The longer the horizontal profile, the more it deflects under its own weight, and the worse the screen runs on the rail. On a terrace that means either a heavier section or splitting the opening.
Splitting into two leaves meeting in the middle solves two things at once: each half is shorter and lighter, and you can open from either side. The cost is the post in the middle, which sits on the sight line. On a terrace with a view that sometimes matters more than convenience, and the conversation moves towards a motorised screen with a single sheet.
Wind loading is the factor specific to outdoors here. A wide sheet behaves like a sail: on upper floors and open terraces the airflow pushes the mesh out of its guide. The fix is channel depth and section stiffness, and it is decided at the survey rather than afterwards.
Third, sand distributes unevenly along a long rail, so the screen starts binding at one point. Cleaning is more frequent than on a narrow opening, and it has to be done along the whole length rather than where it stuck.

A hinged panel would need a clear sector almost a metre wide — on a terrace that metre does not exist.
Common questions
Can I have it without a post in the middle?
On a long span that means a heavier section or a motorised screen. The surveyor will say what fits your opening.
Will the wind push it out?
In exposed positions we specify a deep channel and a stiff section. An ordinary window construction does not belong out there.
Why does it bind in one spot?
Sand settles unevenly along a long rail. Clean the whole channel, not just where it stuck.
