The problem with a wide opening is not the length of the fabric but the rigidity of the frame. The longer the horizontal profile, the more it bends under its own weight, and the worse the screen runs along the rail. So on large spans we either specify a different section or divide the opening.
Dividing into two leaves that meet solves both issues at once: each half is shorter and lighter, and the opening can be used from either side. The cost is the post in the middle, which stands on the sight line. On a panoramic opening with a view that sometimes matters more than convenience, and then the answer moves towards a motorised screen with a single sheet.

Third, sand settles unevenly along a long rail, so the screen binds at one point while running freely elsewhere. Cleaning has to cover the full length.

Can it be done without a central post?
