When Mosquitoes and Midges Peak in Dubai

There is no single season here. The winter months bring the classic peak, and the summer brings a second one indoors, because everything lives on air conditioning and standing water. So the honest answer to when the mosquitoes come is: nearly all year, with two different peaks.

There is no single season here. The winter months bring the classic peak, and the summer brings a second one indoors, because everything lives on air conditioning and standing water. So the honest answer to when the mosquitoes come is: nearly all year, with two different peaks.

01THE SEASON IS SET BY WATER AND TEMPERATURE, NOT THE CALENDAR

Winters here are warm enough that the population never resets. In peak heat activity drops; when the heat eases and the humidity stays, it comes back.

02GEOGRAPHY MATTERS MORE THAN THE MONTH

Waterfronts, canals, community lagoons and irrigated planting hold insects all year. Lower floors near water feel it more than upper ones.

03SANDFLIES ARE A SEPARATE STORY

They are smaller than mosquitoes and the standard aperture lets them through. People conclude the screen does not work, when it is the aperture that does not.

04WHEN TO ORDER

  • Before the heat eases and the windows start being opened
  • If you need it urgently, say so with the enquiry — our own production means no waiting on supply
  • Motorised and automatic systems: decide before the fit-out
  • Near water, price a finer mesh from the start

The winter peak: November to March

The air cools to a comfortable range, windows are opened everywhere and mosquitoes get exactly the temperature they need to breed.

This is the season most people notice, and it is when screen orders spike.

It runs longest near water: canals, lagoons, irrigated parks.

The summer peak: an indoor one

In summer nobody opens a window and it seems the problem has gone. It has not.

Condensate from air-conditioning units, irrigation and drainage in landscaped areas give mosquitoes standing water where there is no rain at all.

So insects appear in stairwells, car parks and service corridors, and come into flats through doors and ventilation rather than through openings.

Where it is worse and where it is easier

By water — canals, marinas, lagoons — the season is longer and the numbers higher. Coastal districts and everything around Dubai Water Canal feel it first.

Green districts with irrigation have their own permanent source: the ground is watered daily.

Dry districts of towers away from water fare better, but there the insect arrives on the airflow and gets in high up, where you would not expect it.

What comes besides mosquitoes

Sand flies are smaller than mosquitoes and pass straight through standard mesh. If bites appear while the screen is in place, that is usually them — the answer is a finer weave.

Flies are the summer problem near catering and waste areas.

Birds are a separate story: on balconies they are more of a nuisance than insects, and pigeon netting deals with it rather than a mosquito screen.

Activity follows water rather than the calendar: wherever there is irrigation, a lagoon or a canal, the insects stay all year.

When to order

The sensible time is before the season, in September or October. Then the fitting is unhurried and the choice of dates is wide.

In the middle of the season the load rises and lead times lengthen everywhere in the market, ours included.

If the screen is already up, autumn is the moment to check the mesh and the mechanism: sand accumulates over the summer and a guide that was fine in spring may already be stiff.

Common questions

When is the peak?

The classic one runs from November to March. In summer there is a second, indoor peak driven by air-conditioning condensate.

Why are there mosquitoes when it does not rain?

Condensate and irrigation give them standing water all year.

Why do bites continue behind a screen?

Most often sand flies, which are finer than the mesh. A finer weave is the answer.

Is it worse near water?

Yes, the season lasts longer and the numbers are higher.

When is the best time to order?

September or October, before the season. Lead times are shorter.
