A mosquito screen on a terrace

Mosquito Nets for Terraces and Pergolas

A terrace is the hardest opening we deal with, because there is often no frame to fix to and nothing to break the wind. What works outdoors is a system whose mesh edge locks into the guide rather than sitting in it by friction.

01A TERRACE WORKS IN THE EVENING FROM OCTOBER TO APRIL

Those are the same hours when midges rise off watered lawns and standing water: outside becomes uncomfortable exactly when you go out.

02THE FABRIC RUNS IN SIDE CHANNELS

There are no leaves and no hinges: the system fixes to posts, a beam or a wall, and everything depends on the channels.

03MEASURING BETWEEN THE POSTS IS NOT ENOUGH

The profiles take up space at the edges, and the fabric will not fit the clear dimension afterwards. That is calculated at the survey, not after fabrication.

04WHAT NOT TO FORGET

  • Terrace tiling is laid to a fall — a gap at the bottom becomes a doorway for midges
  • An open span with no frame needs zip-track
  • On a large terrace the fabric is heavy: without a drive it stops being used
  • Terraces start at 200 AED in the price list

What Dubai changes

Outdoors the wind stops being a detail and becomes the design constraint. An ordinary screen holds its mesh in a channel by friction; a gust pushes the edge out, and after that the sheet tears. On an open terrace here that is a matter of weeks rather than years.

A zip-track solves it by sewing a zip-like bead into the edge of the fabric, which runs inside the guide and physically cannot come out. That is where the name comes from, and it is the reason terraces here get enclosed properly rather than decoratively.

The second outdoor factor is sun. Fabric on a terrace sees direct light all day, and glass fibre dries out faster in that position than anywhere in the house.

The third is weight. A several-metre sheet is heavy, and a system you have to raise and lower by hand every evening simply stops being used. That is why terraces so often end up motorised, not for luxury but for the system to survive contact with real life.

One honest limit: a zip-track is not a wall. It holds insects and takes the edge off the wind. It does not turn a terrace into a room, and you should not plan for silence or air conditioning behind it.

Common ordering mistakes

Fitting an indoor system outdoors. The mesh leaves the guide at the first serious gust, and the repair costs more than the right system would have.

Choosing manual operation on a large span. It works for the first fortnight and then nobody bothers.

Putting a post in the middle of a pergola to make the span manageable. A pergola exists to be open; the post removes the reason for having one.

Expecting a screened terrace to behave like an enclosed room. It will not, and being told that afterwards is worse than being told now.

There are no leaves and no hinges here: the fabric runs in side channels, and everything depends on them.

Common questions

Will it hold in the wind?

A zip-track will: the edge of the fabric locks into the channel and cannot be pushed out. An ordinary screen will not.

Can I operate it by hand?

On a small pergola yes. On a large terrace the fabric is heavy and a manual system stops being used.

Will the terrace become a room?

No. It holds insects and reduces the wind, but it is not glazing and not a wall.

Is there a threshold?

There does not need to be. A flat bottom guide keeps the floor level between inside and outside.

Which fabric outdoors?

Not the finest. On an open terrace fine mesh clogs quickly, and easy cleaning matters more than aperture.
