In Dubai a clogged screen is more common than a torn one. Dry sand brushes off with a soft brush; compacted dust needs soapy water. Do not run a vacuum over the mesh: the nozzle pulls fibres out of the weave.
01FIRST WORK OUT WHAT IT IS CLOGGED WITH
Run a finger over it: dry dust on the finger is fresh film and brushes off. Grey mesh with a clean finger means sand sitting inside the weave, and that needs water.
02WASH IT OFF THE OPENING, ON A FLAT SURFACE
Warm soapy water and a soft sponge on both sides, without pressing: the mesh is under tension and a pushed-in patch shows afterwards.
03DRY IT IN THE SHADE
Rinse with a hose at low pressure and let it dry out of the sun: direct sunlight ages the strand faster.
04WHAT NOT TO DO
- Vacuum the mesh: the nozzle pulls strands out of the weave
- Use a pressure washer: the mesh will come out of its groove
- Use solvents or aggressive chemicals
- Attack a sticky film with a dry brush: it only smears deeper
First work out what it is clogged with
Run a finger across the mesh. If dry dust comes away on your finger, it is a fresh film and a brush will take it.
If the mesh looks grey against the light and your finger picks up nothing, the sand is inside the weave. Brushing will not touch that; it needs water.
If there is a sticky film and you live near trees or the sea, it is organic matter or salt with moisture. That also needs soapy water, but treat it more gently: a dry brush on that film simply smears it deeper.
How to wash it properly
Take the screen off the opening if it comes off. Washing it in place is awkward and the result is poor.
Lay it on a flat surface and wash both sides with warm soapy water and a soft sponge. Do not scrub hard: the mesh is under tension and a pushed-in area shows afterwards.
Rinse with a hose at low pressure. High pressure drives the mesh out of its groove.
Let it dry in the shade. Drying in direct sun accelerates ageing of the fibre.

Do not vacuum the mesh. The nozzle pulls fibres out and the weave opens up unevenly.
Do not use a pressure washer. The mesh will leave the groove and the edge will crease.
Do not use solvents or aggressive chemicals. Glass fibre dislikes them and the frame can lose its coating.
Do not dry it in direct sun if shade is available.
The finer the aperture, the fewer particles pass and the more get caught: next to a building site the finest mesh becomes a partition within months.
Why the finest mesh clogs first
It is simple geometry: the smaller the hole, the fewer particles pass and the more get stuck.
In Dubai that has real consequences. The finest mesh, fitted next to a construction site or in a desert district, turns into a dense panel within a few months. The room stops ventilating and the screen gets taken down.
So the right choice is not always the tightest weave. Where there is a lot of dust, it is wiser to take something easy to lift out and wash, and to save the fine aperture for places where midges are genuinely the problem.
