A hinged screen door with a closer at a villa entrance

Hinged Mosquito Screen Doors

A hinged screen door lives or dies on three pieces of hardware: the hinges that carry it, the closer that brings it back, and the catch that holds it shut. Get those right and it outlasts every other system on a door in daily use.

01THE HINGE SIDE IS SHOWN ON SITE

The surveyor opens your main door, stands in the opening and shows both options before writing one down. The leaf must not swing into a wall, a corner or a cupboard.

02THE SWING IS ALMOST ALWAYS OPPOSITE THE DOOR

The glass leaf goes inward, the screen outward, and they do not compete for the same space. At a garden exit it is often reversed — then the reveal depth and the handle get checked.

03AT A KITCHEN EXIT, LOOK AT THE HOB

A hot surface next to an open leaf is a bad idea, and that is settled by choosing the side rather than by habit.

04TWO WAYS TO BRING THE LEAF BACK

  • Spring hinges pull with constant force — for light leaves
  • A closer eases it over the last centimetres so the frame takes no impact
  • On a busy entrance it is the closer that goes in
  • The shut position is held by a magnetic strip, not a latch: the door opens with a shoulder

Swing direction is decided on site, not on an order form. The leaf has to clear the existing door, its handle, the step and whatever stands outside. Getting it wrong is the most common reason a hinged screen has to be refitted, and it costs nothing to establish beforehand.

The closer is the part that decides whether the door is used as intended. Without one it is propped open in the first week and the screen becomes decoration. With one, it shuts behind somebody carrying a tray, which is the entire reason the type exists.

In Dubai the closer needs adjusting once after the first hot months. The oil inside behaves differently at 45 degrees than at 25, and a door that closed cleanly in winter starts slamming or stops latching. That is a five-minute adjustment, not a fault.

Hinges are the wearing part. On a door used dozens of times a day they sag over time and the leaf drops, catching on the threshold. They are adjustable and, eventually, replaceable, and it is far cheaper than a new door.

One limit worth stating: past the width of an ordinary door the leaf becomes heavy enough that the hinges suffer. Wide openings belong to pleated systems.

Common questions

The door has started slamming. Why?

The closer needs adjusting for the heat. Five minutes, not a fault.

The leaf has dropped and catches. Fixable?

Usually the hinges have sagged. They adjust, and eventually they get replaced.

Which way should it open?

Decided on site: it must clear the existing door, its handle and the step.
