A mosquito screen is built for insects. Its mesh does not hold a bird, and the frame is not designed for the load. For pigeons the answer is different: a netting on a proper fixing, or a screen with a reinforced fabric where the opening also has to keep insects out.

An insect screen closes an opening against insects. Balcony bird protection closes the whole volume and carries weight and impact. A different class of structure.
02A PIGEON IS A LOAD, NOT AN INSECT
Standard mesh sags under its weight and comes out of the groove after repeated impacts. It needs a different strand, a different tension and a different perimeter fixing.
03BIRD-PROOF MESH SOLVES THE OPENING
A reinforced weave goes into the same frame and holds a load far better than standard. A balcony door, a window, a glazed bay — that is its case.
04WHERE THE HONEST ANSWER STOPS
- Birds getting in through an open door: we close the opening with Bird-Proof
- Pigeons landing on the parapet outside: that is an adjacent trade, not ours
- A net over a whole balcony is visible outside and falls under building rules
- Check with the management company before ordering, not after fitting
Why the ordinary screen fails
Standard mesh tears under claws. A pigeon lands, grips, and the fabric goes.
Light fixings do not carry the load either: a bird pushing against a screen loosens Z-brackets in a season.
And a screen closes an opening, whereas the birds are usually on the parapet and the ceiling of the balcony, which no screen covers.
What works instead
Pigeon netting over the balcony opening: a polymer net on a cable or a frame, fixed at the perimeter. It does not close the view, it passes air freely and it carries the load.
Spikes on the parapet, where the problem is only birds landing rather than entering.
If the balcony also has to be insect-proof, the two jobs are done separately: netting on the outer perimeter, a mosquito screen on the door.
What building management will say
In most towers the netting must not change the look of the facade. Practically this means a neutral colour, fixings inside the balcony and nothing projecting beyond the parapet.
Some buildings require an application from the contractor before the work. Ask the concierge before ordering rather than on the day.
A villa is simpler: there the choice is yours.
About droppings and cleaning
A netting solves the source of the problem: once the birds cannot land or nest, the mess stops accumulating.
Cleaning what is already there is a separate job, and we do not do it. If a balcony has been a nesting site for a season, it is worth having it cleaned before the netting goes on, otherwise the mess stays sealed in.
The netting itself is washed with a hose. It has no mechanism to wear out.
A doubtful solution sold as the right one costs more in trust than a lost order does in money.
Where the two problems meet
The common case in a tower: mosquitoes at the door and pigeons on the parapet. These are two constructions, and quoting them as one item would be misleading.
A screen on the balcony door with a reinforced mesh handles the insects and survives contact with an animal.
The netting handles the birds.
The surveyor measures both in one visit and prices them separately, so you can take one now and the other later.
